To get the best of Zanzibar we suggest you spend a few days in the busy and bustling Stone Town in the south-west of the island, and then relax for a few more days on the exotic beaches on the north or east coasts.
Stone Town
Stone Town, on the west coast of Zanzibar, is the heart of the island. It has a magical and exciting atmosphere. You can lose yourself in the maze of narrow twisting streets, wonder at the old but still magnificent buildings and enjoy the bustle of the busy markets. Spice tours run daily from the town. You can take boat trips to smaller islands or take a guided tour of the former slave market. There are plenty of good hotels, restaurants and bars, as well as the lively barbecues along the sea front every evening and many stalls along the streets that sell local crafts.
Nungwi
Nungwi is on the northernmost tip of the Island, about 1 hour’s drive from Stone Town. Without doubt, you will find the best beaches on the island here. This is Paradise. You can just relax on a quiet beach, or take advantage of the many activities available – snorkelling, diving, going on a sunset cruise in a fishing dhow or on one of the other boat trips. And there is plenty of social life at the beach bars and restaurants. After a few days in Nungwi it is hard to tear yourself away!
